Best California Art Shows — Artist Lisa Ramos’ Favorite Events & Festivals

After exhibiting at over 200 juried art shows across California, I’ve experienced firsthand how different each event can be. Some shows are highly curated with strong handmade work, while others are more about entertainment, food, and community atmosphere.

I’m Artist Lisa Ramos, the designer behind MONOLISA — a California brand specializing in handcrafted leather handbags and sculpted jewelry. Many of the shows listed here are where collectors first discover my work in person.

How to Choose the Right California Art Show

Not all art shows feel the same. Some are highly curated, some are large festival experiences, and some are smaller community events where the conversations are more personal.

For Handmade Quality

Look for juried shows, artist-focused events, and fairs where the maker is present in the booth. These are often the best places to find original work.

For a Fun Day Out

Large art and wine festivals are great when you want music, food, drinks, and a lively crowd. Just know the vendor mix may be broader.

For Gift Shopping

Holiday markets and boutique shows are often best when you want meaningful gifts and shoppers are more focused on buying.

For Meeting Artists

Smaller shows and local favorites can be easier for conversation. You can ask questions and learn more about the work directly from the maker.

A Personal Note From Artist Lisa Ramos

One thing I’ve learned after participating in over 200 California art shows is that the success of an event is not always based only on crowd size or foot traffic. Many artists build long-term relationships with collectors through newsletters, repeat customers, social media, and personal invitations to events.

In my own business, a significant portion of show sales often comes from customers who specifically attend because they saw the event featured in my monthly newsletter or online updates. I also believe newsletters help educate customers about art shows, introduce people to handmade work, and help build a stronger community of buyers who genuinely appreciate artists and small creative businesses.

That’s one reason I believe successful art shows are truly a partnership between artists, organizers, collectors, and the surrounding community. When artists actively promote events, it not only supports their own booth — it also helps neighboring artists, local businesses, and the overall success of the event itself.
