Jewelry Care - How to Clean Crystal Jewelry
The video features how to clean your MONOLISA crystal jewelry with Artist Lisa Ramos.
Keeping your MONOLISA crystal jewelry clean and long-lasting means properly caring for your pieces. Jewelry designed with crystal elements requires special care. The jewelry tips in this blog article will help you maintain the longevity of your shimmering handmade crystal jewelry pieces.
Cleaning Steps – Handmade Crystal Jewelry
Prior to cleaning MONOLISA crystal jewelry you will need the following:
- Two small bowls
- Warm water
- Palmolive soap
- Soft cloth
Fill your first bowl with warm water and Palmolive soap. In the second bowl, pour plain warm water. Soak your MONOLISA jewelry pieces for about five minutes in the soapy water. Then rinse carefully with warm water, either by soaking the jewelry in the warm water bowl or running it gently under the faucet. Carefully pat dry with a soft cloth or allow the pieces to air dry.
Remember not to use any harsh brushes or sponges. For crystals containing a foil backing, use caution not to scratch the foil and avoid using any type of brush on the back of the stone. Treat the crystals like glass—they can break or become damaged if dropped.
On some earring styles, the crystal elements easily slide off the components, so avoid flipping your pieces upside down. The picture below is an example of an earring style where the crystals can easily come off.

Understanding Jewelry Tarnish, Metals & Proper Jewelry Care
All jewelry metals naturally change over time depending on environmental exposure, skin chemistry, moisture, storage conditions, and contact with products such as lotions, perfumes, cleaning agents, hairspray, sunscreen, chlorine, salt air, and sweat.
Sterling silver, Argentium silver, gold-filled metals, brass, copper, plated metals, and even certain stainless steel components can oxidize, darken, tarnish, or change color when exposed to certain conditions. This is a natural chemical reaction and not considered a manufacturing defect.
The rate of tarnishing or discoloration varies greatly from person to person and environment to environment.
Customers living near coastal environments or areas with high humidity may experience faster tarnishing due to salt air and moisture exposure. Certain skin pH levels, medications, and beauty products may also accelerate metal discoloration.
- Store jewelry in a dry area or sealed bag when not in use.
- Avoid exposing jewelry to harsh chemicals or moisture.
- Remove jewelry before swimming, bathing, exercising, or sleeping.
- Apply perfumes, lotions, and hairspray before putting jewelry on.
- Gently clean jewelry regularly to help maintain its appearance.
Handmade jewelry is delicate by nature and should be handled with care. Proper maintenance and storage can greatly extend the beauty and longevity of your jewelry pieces.
